Please expect to leave your dog with me anywhere from 1- 3 hours. Grooming time depends on the size, breed, condition of the coat and co-operation from the dog. I will try to give you an estimate at the time of check in. I do not rush with the dogs as I take pride in providing a positive experience for them. I will give you a 15-20 minute heads up before they are done.
Grooming prices depend on a number of factors, size, breed, condition of coat, style requested and the temperament of the dog. Additional fees are added for de-matting, coat pelts, impacted coats and behaviour of the dog.
Pricing is based on a 4-12 week schedule. Pets should be groomed within that time frame. Double coated breeds should be regularly groomed with each changing season to help with removing the undercoat.
No, I will not shave a double coated dog for many reasons.
Shaving a double coated dog can lead to long-term damage. A double coat has two unique layers of fur, the undercoat and topcoat. Sometimes the dog's hair will not grow back the same. Cutting the fur damages the natural cycle of a double coated dog. Topcoat can take up to 2 years to grow back completely or not at all. Some coats can grow back patchy, thinner and can develop skin conditions.
The Undercoat is dense and made of short hairs. The undercoat needs to be removed as it prevents the air from flowing between the topcoat and skin. This helps with keeping the dog cool.
The Topcoat if made up of longer hairs called guard hairs. The guard hairs helps repel dirt and moisture, while the undercoat protects from high or low temperatures. The topcoat helps to keep the heat off the skin, and unlike people, dogs do not sweat through their skin. Dogs sweat by panting, and in all Northern Breeds, through their paw pads. Topcoats also act as a raincoat and is really important in the winter for keeping them dry and warm.
Shaving a double coat only hinders their ability to regulate their body temperature. Keep their hair brushed and remove all the undercoat and the dog to remain with their natural ability to keep themselves cool and protected from the sun in the summer and warm and dry in the winter. Double coated dogs have a different system regulating their body temperature.
No. Dogs become excited when they see their owners and may get stressed and anxious if they cannot immediately go to them. I need your dog's undivided attention and focused on me during the groom to prevent any injuries.
